Discovering Delphi Greece
A visit to Delphi Greece brings together an ancient mountain sanctuary and a museum filled with offerings from that sanctuary. In Phocis, central Greece, the site is associated with Apollo and the Pythia, the priestess consulted by the ancient Greek world. Start by deciding how you want to understand those connections: with a guide travelling from Athens, with your own transport and a local guide, or through an independent visit supported by audio.
The Sacred Way, treasuries and Temple of Apollo form the core of the outdoor visit. The museum adds the sculpture and dedications that make the ruins easier to read. Treat these as complementary parts of the day rather than choosing solely between an outdoor photograph and an indoor collection. Delphi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Guided journeys from Athens, museum audio and digital reconstructions offer different ways into the sanctuary's story.
Things to do in Delphi Greece
Follow the relationship between the buildings rather than collecting isolated landmarks. The treasuries and offerings along the Sacred Way expressed the ambitions of Greek cities. The Temple of Apollo stood at the centre of the sanctuary's religious identity, while the theatre lies above it. Read the archaeological site guide for the layout, then use the temple page to distinguish its architecture from the circular Tholos.
The museum's collection includes the bronze Charioteer, the Sphinx of the Naxians and the statues traditionally called Kleobis and Biton, whose identification remains open. These objects connect the sanctuary with artistic commissions, athletic victories and public dedications. Our museum guide explains the collection themes; allow room in your plan for the displays available during your visit.
The story of Apollo defeating Python and the idea of Delphi as the world's centre belong to ancient mythology. The oracle guide separates those traditions from the Pythia's historical role. For the wider chronology and the sanctuary's political connections, continue with Delphi's history.
Choose a way to visit
Begin with the part of the visit that interests you most. A focus on sculpture points towards time with the museum collection; an interest in ancient public life points towards the treasuries and dedications. Leave room for the other setting as well, because both belong to the same sanctuary story.
The organised bus options from Athens combine return transport with guiding in the site and museum, with admission depending on the selected ticket option. For both bus offers, if you choose the option without tickets, book your own admission for 12:30 to 13:30. The minivan day includes pickup from central Athens and a guided visit to the archaeological site, with admission extra. Use our tour comparison to choose by departure arrangements and the kind of explanation you want once you arrive.
Independent visitors can pair admission with museum audio or a multilingual 3D audiovisual app. A separate smartphone self-guided tour offers reconstructions and audio without admission, making it useful when you already have an entry ticket. Audio is a recorded companion; a private guided visit gives you a person interpreting the sanctuary and collection together. For the road journey as part of your day, see day trips from Athens.
Plan around access and the seasons
A local visitor report published on 31 August 2026, with a review dated 30 October 2026, reported the stadium, Athena Pronaia and Castalian Spring closed. Plan your route along the barriers and directions in place on arrival, keeping the sanctuary and museum as the focus. The Tholos photograph illustrates the ancient setting rather than today's access.
The museum and archaeological site have separate opening calendars. Summer Tuesdays have different museum hours, and the site's closing time steps down during September and October. Start with opening hours and tickets before fixing a return journey. Carry water, sun protection and suitable closed shoes for uneven paths, with an extra layer for the mountain setting.
Staying in Delphi or Arachova changes how you arrange the beginning and end of your cultural visit. Delphi keeps the museum central to the plan; Arachova offers a mountain-town base. Compare places to stay, transport connections and the seasonal planning guide. Hosios Loukas, near Steiri on Mount Helicon, adds a Byzantine architectural subject to a regional itinerary.

Questions about visiting Delphi
Does admission cover the site and museum?
The regular official combined ticket is 20 EUR, with a 10 EUR reduced rate for eligible visitors. The ministry's information dated 8 September 2026 also lists the regular price for winter. Audio and 3D packages are separate commercial offers.
Can Delphi fit into a day from Athens?
Organised day trips combine the outward and return journey with a visit. Choose by the guiding and pickup arrangements rather than treating the road time as time inside the sanctuary.
Is this an authority or tourism-office website?
This is an independent guide. It is not operated by the Ephorate of Antiquities, the Greek Ministry of Culture or a tourism office, and has no institutional affiliation with them.
